Free Tutorial – Filled Triangle Whirl Paper Quilling Earrings

Last month I shared a free tutorial for these fun triangle whirl paper quilling earrings.  It was a fun new design that I thought of making a long time ago, but finally got around to actually trying.  I thought it was a bit plain, though, so I had to try another one, but this time fill up the middle to make it a bit more substantial and interesting.  And I love the new design even more!

I will share below the basics of making the outer triangle whirl shape, but if you need more details about how to create it, click here for the full tutorial

Supplies You Need (for one pair of earrings):

  • 2 strips of paper 17″-24″ long (if you make a smaller or larger triangle you may need a shorter or longer strip of paper.  If I’m using paper that comes in strips of 17″ I just use that.  If I’m using strips of paper that come in 24″, I just use that.  So the length is a bit flexible.)
  • several short strips of various colors of paper that you wish to use to fill your triangle.
  • glue (My favorite is PPA which you can find at Custom Quilling, or here on Amazon)
  • Border Buddy by Quilled Creations (you can find it at Custom Quilling and on Amazon)
  • Thin dowel and/or needle quilling tool – you could also use a toothpick – for rolling the corners of the triangle.
  • slotted or needle quilling tool to make tight rolls for filling (click here to read my tips about making tight rolls with smooth centers)
  • sealant for making your earrings water resistant (click here to read more about different sealants or read below about the exact sealants I used on this pair)

Instructions:

  • First you will need to create your outer triangle whirl shape.  Here are all of the tutorial pictures for making that.  If you need further instruction for this, click here for the full photo and explanation tutorial.  Basically  I wrap a 24″ strip of paper around the largest level of the Border Buddy and then curl each corner of it.  I put sealant on it to stiffen it up so it keeps its shape.  Once the sealant is half dried, recurl it to keep the nice shape.

  • Now it’s time to start the filling in!  So your triangles should already have one layer of sealant on them.  I found it convenient to pin them into place to make it easier to place the coils without the pieces moving around all over.  Now take your small strips of paper and roll them into tight rolls.  Here I am using two different colors.  For some of the tight rolls I glued together two strips of different colors.  All of these tight rolls vary from 3/4″ strips of paper to 3″ strips of paper.  I make a couple with longer lengths to fill in the main space, and then make tiny ones to fill in the extra little spaces. For tips on how to make these little tight rolls with smooth centers, click here.  For the bigger rolls I use this tool to make the tight rolls.  For the tiny ones I use a needle tool.

  • After finishing, I paint on a layer of sealant, let it dry, flip it over and paint another layer of sealant, and let it dry.  Then I put on the earring findings. Depending on how tightly you rolled your corners, you may or may not have a little space in one of the curls to put in a jump ring.  You’ll notice in the bottom left of this photo that there is a space in that corner, so I just stuck my needle tool in there to widen the space, and stuck my jump ring in there.  Once both earrings had earring hooks on them, I painted on a layer of topcoat and hung them to dry.  For this pair I used Ceramcoat all purpose sealer for the sealant (click here for my review and tips on how to use it) and I used Diamond Glaze for the topcoat (click here for my review and tips for using it).

Here are the earrings all done!  They’d be awesome in so many color combos!  For this pair the colors I used were Traverse City Cherry and Brandywine, both Culture Pop Papers from Little Circles.  I love shades of red and I will probably be taking this pair of earrings for myself!

They are a nice semi small pair of earrings.
