Sturdy Matte Finish for Paper Quilled Jewelry with Matte PPA

When I first started making paper quilled jewelry I didn’t like the look of a super glossy coat on it.  I wanted it to look like what it was – paper!  At the time I was using a liquid matte sealant that dries with more of a matte finish than the Ceramcoat all purpose sealer (click here for a review of Ceramcoat sealer).  So I was able to use just one or two layers of that sealant and my piece would still be quite matte.  However, if I wanted to sell the pieces I used 3 layers and also a glossy topcoat just to make sure they were as sturdy as possible!

I have since grown to appreciate the look of paper quilled jewelry with a glossy coat on it, but sometimes I still want that true paper look. But I want the paper look while still having the sturdiness of a sealer and the protection of a topcoat!  Thankfully this is possible with matte PPA! (click here to see how to use PPA for your quilled jewelry)

When I made this snail style earring (click here to read more about this design) I felt like a matte finish would be much better than glossy. I’m not sure why, but that’s just what I wanted!

First I used a good soaking of Ceramcoat sealer to secure the shape of the earring.  The wire inside helped me to bend it to the right shape, but then I needed to use the sealer to stiffen the paper to keep the shape secure and stiff! The sealer gives a slight shine.  I then painted on a layer of Matte PPA with a small paintbrush.  I made sure that it was a thin layer so that it didn’t glob up in between the spirals, I wanted a nice clean finished look.

In these two photos you can see one earring has already been coated with the PPA and has a matte look, while the other is slightly shiny because it only has the sealer on it so far.  I wanted you to see the difference between the two!

And here is a photo after both earrings have been coated with PPA matte:
